In 2017, We Want To Expand Our Support For Freelance Journalism
Shadowproof offers a platform to young, talented, and marginalized journalists to produce critical reporting on subjects that deserve more coverage and scrutiny.
Thanks to readers like you, this year we funded important projects like Rania Khalek’s on-the-ground reporting at the Democratic National Convention. We also published freelance journalism on corporate funding of presidential debates, United States weapons shipments to Saudi Arabia, the expanding Terrorist Watch List, and more.
We look forward to funding more work from independent journalists in 2017, but we can’t do it without your help.
Shadowproof is funded entirely by our readers, not corporate sponsors, institutions, or mega-donors. Reader donations, which average around $20, go a long way to fund journalism that makes it possible to explore issues and hold power accountable.
We publish reporting that other outlets won’t publish because we have no mega-donors to please. Since Shadowproof understands freelance journalists have it tough in a rapidly deteriorating media economy, we pay journalists what they believe is fair instead of relying on some lousy metric, like word count, that may result in underpayment.
Your support also gives us space to experiment with other kinds of journalism, as we did with Roqayah Chamseddine’s oral history project, “Islam In America.” It means publishing pieces on subjects rarely covered, like the suppression of free speech at city universities in New York and the experiences of asylum seekers in Hong Kong.
Help us start 2017 with a robust budget for funding important reporting. Support independent journalists, who often struggle to find a platform for their work. Please make a donation or become a Shadowproof member today.
