Help Fund Roqayah Chamseddine’s New Project Dismantling Muslim Caricatures
Hate crimes against Muslim Americans have skyrocketed in the past couple of years. Moreover, an alarming number of Americans do not know a single Muslim at all.
It is critical to Shadowproof that we humanize Muslim Americans instead of caricaturing them in the ways in which they are all too often depicted in the news and entertainment.
Using video, audio, and written word, Roqayah Chamseddine, who regularly publishes the “Sharp Edges” column for Shadowproof, will profile a Muslim American every week for the next couple of months as part of an “Islam In America” project.
We’ve set a goal of $4,000: Can you please donate $20 or more to help fund the production of this multimedia project?
A working class Muslim American with a job in the gaming industry. A single mother, who is a refugee from Bosnia. A queer convert, who works in the food service industry.
All of the above are examples of some of the Muslim Americans that will be profiled by Roqayah. Her project will show what community life is like and what the impact of Islamophobia can be on Muslim Americans.
Multiple profiles will feature videos and some will feature audio clips from interviews. Transcripts of conversations will be published as a kind of first person account of life in America for the individuals profiled.
The completed project will stand as a counter to the dehumanization of American Muslims that goes on in American society and culture on a daily basis.
Can you please help us reach our $4,000 goal by making a donation of $10 or more to fund this project?
