“We’re dying slowly”, working Americans plead for healthcare

Due to our uniquely American pay or die healthcare system, in Kansas City at the Free Health Clinic, the patients seeking treatment were mostly working Americans simply priced out of healthcare.

Many of the people I met today are working full time and simply cannot afford the exorbitant monthly health insurance premium, so they go without. The choice is stark. Health insurance or rent, food and clothing for the kids.

As I wandered around and observed all the work, more than anything, I reflected on what it means to live in a country which treats healthcare as a privilege not a right. Here I was standing in the middle of a MASH tent in a major American city–this would undoubtedly be the last hope for many of the people we’d meet the next day.
