DNCLeak: Three More Out At Democratic National Committee
Three more officials at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) have now resigned in the aftermath of leaked emails published by Wikileaks, which showed a conspiracy by DNC leadership to undermine the presidential campaign of Senator Bernie Sanders.
DNC CEO Amy Dacey, communications director Luis Miranda, and chief financial officer (CFO) Brad Marshall resigned on Tuesday as Interim DNC chairwoman Donna Brazile apologized for the DNC’s conduct.
The former head of the DNC, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, resigned prior to the Democratic National Convention when the story first broke.
The resignations appear to signal that further disclosures promised by Wikileaks could prove to be equally embarrassing for the DNC, and that the DNC would rather clean house then try to defend the conduct of party leadership during the 2016 Democratic presidential primaries.
By all accounts the DNC, which is supposed to remain neutral in party primaries, did everything possible to tilt the race in Hillary Clinton’s favor. Emails revealed so far show DNC Chair Wasserman Schultz openly mocking Sanders and saying he would never be president. Other officials conspired on how to frame a “narrative” to paint Sanders as incompetent and unworthy of the presidency. In one email, Marshall openly mused about using Sanders’ religious beliefs (or lack thereof) against him.
But will the purge work? Will firing senior DNC leadership persuade Sanders supporters to vote Democrat in November?
A recent poll by CNN shows supporters of Bernie Sanders are not following the senator’s command to fall in line behind the candidacy of Hillary Clinton. 13% of Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents who supported Sanders saying they are now planning to vote for Green Party candidate Dr. Jill Stein.
It looks as though, for many Sanders supporters, the leaked DNC emails have solidified their opposition to Hillary Clinton. The next round of disclosures by Wikileaks could drive away even more.
