Labor movements across the United States have worked tirelessly this year to improve working conditions, create job security, and expand unionization. Covering these picket lines is necessary, especially as we watch workers fearlessly unite in order to strike for a better future.

The Verizon worker’s agreement, released on May 30, is evidence of the transformative power of the labor strike. According to a tentative four-year agreement, which came about as a direct result of 40,000 Verizon workers going on strike since April 13, they will see a 10.9% increase in raises over the next four years, “a $1000 signing bonus plus a $250 healthcare reimbursement account in the Northeast, $2800 minimum in profit sharing, pension increases, and a first contract for Verizon Wireless retail store employees in Brooklyn, NY and Everett, MA.”

All proposed cuts in accident and disability benefits were withdrawn, as were proposed reductions of pensions. The official Facebook page for the Stand Up To Verizon movement noted that “striking workers proved that when working people stand together and fight back, they can win.
