Laura Flanders: Pirates, Hackers, And The Sharing Economy

This week’s episode of The Laura Flanders Show covers several diverse, yet inter-connected topics about the economy. First, she talks to an author of a book on the changing nature of capitalism:

Misfits of all sorts may be the best suited for today’s askew economy, says one of our guests, Alexa Clay, co-author of “The Misfit Economy: Lessons in Creativity From Pirates, Hackers, Gangsters, And Other Informal Entrepreneurs.” Her work looks into how pirates and hackers and other misfits can provide inspiration for shaking up this stagnant system!

In the show’s second segment, guest host Pam Brown and a pair of guests imagine a real sharing economy:

Micky Metts is a hacker, activist and organizer, as well as a member of Agaric, a worker-owned cooperative of web developers. Janelle Orsi, co-founder and executive director of the Sustainable Economies Law Center, is a lawyer, advocate, writer, and cartoonist focused on cooperatives, the sharing economy, and community-supported enterprises.

Finally, Laura discusses “Friedrichs vs. California Teachers Association,” a case before the Supreme Court which she calls “the most important labor case in years.”
