The Firedoglake Membership Board oversees direction and policies pursuant to our membership Mission Statement and Bylaws. Among other duties, the Board oversees FDL Association finances and long-term development.

Board Members are drawn from the FDL member community, including long-time commentors and contributors to FDL, and help to plan actions involving member participation.


Edwin M. Walker (“Masaccio”), Chair

Ed serves as the Board’s Chair. A Notre Dame grad with a law degree from Indiana University, Ed was a corporate and securities lawyer in Ohio, an Assistant Attorney General and then securities commissioner in Tennessee. He practiced business and bankruptcy law for 25 years. Ed writes as “masaccio” on financial and other matters.

Ryan Cook, Secretary / Treasurer

Ryan is a specialist in online communications and helped develop and administer FDL’s membership program. He serves as the Board’s Secretary/Treasurer. Ryan attended Roger Williams University majoring in Criminal Justice and Psychology and has worked on policy/political campaigns at Firedoglake and throughout the country.

Michael Whitney, Vice Chair

Michael directs the digital strategy of Firedoglake.com. He previously managed online campaigns with the Service Employees International Union on legislative and financial reform issues. Michael got his start in online politics as the founder of Generation Dean, the youth organizing arm of Howard Dean’s 2004 presidental campaign.

Marcy Wheeler

Marcy is “emptywheel” at Firedoglake. The author of Anatomy of Deceit, a primer on the CIA leak case, she’s provided groundbreaking blogging of the Scooter Libby trial and detailed analysis of Bush’s torture memos, wiretapping and continuing government misdeeds. Marcy has a PhD from the University of Michigan and is a frequently invited speaker. She was awarded the 2009 Hillman Prize for Blog Journalism.

John Chandley (“Scarecrow”)

John graduated from UC Berkeley and Hastings Law and served for twenty years as counsel for the California Energy Commission, authoring policy reports, decisions and energy regulations. He later consulted for 15 years in the electricity sector. Now retired, John has written for FDL as “scarecrow” since 2007.

Donna Middlehurst (“Mauimom”)

Donna graduated from Stanford and holds an MAT from Harvard and JD from UCLA. She has worked as a Congressional aide, junior high English teacher, and as securities lawyer in private practice and at the SEC. She and her husband established the parents’ group which lobbied Congress, resulting in the 1986 National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act.
