FDL Movie Night: L.A. Aboriginal

Dave Tourjé is a freaking force of nature–an unstoppable creative giant. The Los Angeles native (thus the title of tonight’s film, L.A. Aboriginal) lives and breathes art. Raised in Northeast Los Angeles, Dave grew up as a skater and surfer stimulated by the vibrant colors and energy of a neighborhood rich in Latin American immigrant culture with a history of hot rods, low riders and early motocross riding. His family was involved in art and encouraged him to draw and paint.

Late Night: Keep Your Stinkin’ Hands Off My Cheese!

http://youtu.be/SBTt3EO_hNo Government cheese was that dreaded phrase from the 1980s meaning welfare, when processed cheese and butter were stockpiled as a dairy subsidy and then passed out to those on government aid via the Temporary Emergency Food Assistance Program of the Food and Nutrition Service. But now instead of giving away

FDL Movie Night: In the Shadow

It’s not summer without a vacation or a horror movie–and In the Shadow, directed, co-written and co-produced by tonight’s guest Nicole Elmer, brings us a taut tale of psychological and supernatural horror set against a beautiful island backdrop. Add in  the additional layer of sex tourism, Puerto Rican politics, and colonial imperative, plus the bonus of  that rara avis, a female horror director–and well, In the Shadow is a perfect summer FDL movie.

This is not a traditional horror movie in the slasher/gore vein. It is deeper, more supernatural and psychological in nature, raising questions about the price we pay for the things we love the most. It is also shot in lush, vibrant, saturated colors contrasting the island’s beauty with the story’s dark subject matter.

FDL Movie Night: Circle the Wagen

Circle the Wagen follows Dave and his best friend Charlie Pecoraro on their journey down Route 66 in “The Croc,” a baby blue bus purchased, sight unseen, on eBay for $787. Mired by the vehicle’s mechanical problems during his first attempt cross-country, Dave has left The Croc in the parking lot of a church–luckily the pastor likes him–while he and Charlie map out the network of VW clubs along Route 66 that they can turn to for help. Because they are going to need it.
