WATCH: Mara Einstein Discusses Her Book, ‘Black Ops Advertising’

It is becoming harder and harder to tell what is content and what is advertising, as more marketers become involved in politics and news reporting.

Mara Einstein’s book, “Black Ops Advertising: Native Ads, Content Marketing, and the Covert World of the Digital Sell,” delves deep into what she describes as a “fundamental paradigm shift in advertising.”

Einstein writes, “We seem to be well on our way to an advertising-augmented world, where our relationships are monetized and where news is not just entertainment but also full-blown corporate puffery.”

I interviewed Einstein about this advertising phenomenon, its effect on news publishing, the rise of native advertising, Millennials as a prime target of advertisers, and how advertisers manipulate us into sharing their ads by creating social experiences.
