VIDEO: Who Profits From The Nonprofit Industrial Complex?

If all you do is donate money to charity, step it up people.

Even beyond the problems of what Eleanor Goldfield calls “activism light,” there’s the problem of where our donation money actually goes. That’s what Goldfield examines in the latest episode of Act Out!

This week, ’tis better to give than to receive — but who are you giving to and who’s really receiving? With the help of nonprofit employee and activist Anna Kaminski, we dive into the non-profit industry and peek behind that shiny charity veneer.

After this segment, Goldfield discusses fracking and the activists fighting against a natural gas export terminal in Cove Point, Maryland. Check out the full episode for more.

Dan Wright recently covered the growing corruption in the nonprofit sector on The Bullpen, examining how Wall Street is increasingly trying to profit from nonprofit organizations:

But the banksters are not content to just donate to the nonprofit organizations, financial service industry executives are taking positions of influence and control. As one might expect, the vision Wall Street players have of and for the world often clashes with the preexisting culture within those organizations.

… In other words, Wall Street is helping bring dubious management practices to the sector that was setup, in part, to deal with the failures of an economic system run by said dubious management practices. What could go wrong?
