Over Easy: Friday Free For All!

Greetings!

Here’s a few current events to stimulate discussion. Let’s see what people are thinking about!

Here’s the first US government admission of what we already pretty much knew: Fuku Melted fuel most likely went through the floor. There are some scary simulations in the link, along with admissions that the simulations are probably conservative. Not a mention of in in the MSM.

You’ve all been reading about the Duggar scandal and seeing it on TV. As of the date of this post Fox News has spent less than 2 minutes of airtime on it per Salon. Duggar has strong links to too many GOP presidential candidates, I guess.

And if you missed it because you watch Fox: Duggar sued in 2007 to stop DHS from investigating this. His father campaigned on on Death to Child Molesters.

The Intelligent Design folks are busy educating the media and and trashing a Slate writer for suggesting that Intelligent Design and creationism are the same thing. Notice the site name with this story: http://www.evolutionnews.org

On a related note, remember the Santorum Amendment? If Frothy Mixture gets the GOP nod, he’ll probably want you to forget it.

Calif Needs Desalinization. No Question. But the spread of desal plants will create situations like this. Deal with it, water bills are GOING to go up.

A “giant” squid was nearly caught off Auckland. However, it isn’t a giant squid or a colossal squid. Experts just aren’t sure what species it is. Lot of big stuff down deep that we hardly ever see.

NASA will build a robot squid to look for life in the suspected oceans on the outer planets moons.

The ballot initiative for Marijuana for Ohio has been certified and is now collecting signatures. It’s basically full legalization with restrictions. The Ohio GOP (which runs the state) is solidly against it, but the citizens are slightly for it. We’ll see.

Five years for painting a funny picture of the Chinese president. I can only imagine the jealousy of our politicians who must put up with editorial cartoonists.

Boxturtle (Happy Friday to all!)

    Howdy!

Another thought I should have included above: Am I the only one thoroughly amused watching the GOP try to put together their debates? Sooooo you’re going to let Fox News pick the candidates? Well, that’s nothing new! Christie might well get frozen out of the debates and Trump included under most of the rules they’re currently discussing. If Trump actually runs. I’m betting his ego REQUIRES him to run.

There was actually one good idea. Split the early debates into multiple debates and randomly select who gets which. It’s fair and doesn’t give Fox the role of kingmaker. However, the last thing the GOP wants is more debates that allow “fringe” candidates to espouse views that the general population would find repugnant. Which is most everybody except Bush & Christie.

Boxturtle (If your candidate can’t win on his positions, don’t let him state positions)

thanks, BT, guess climate change has forced itself on our news lately, too. As I watch reports out of the hometown I so recently left, may I just say Whew?
As to debates, better than the Comedy Channel, can’t wait to hear We Lurv U Wimmen some more.

Good morning BoxTurtle, Ruth, and the firepups yet to arrive.
Thank you for the post BoxTurtle.

good to see you, got summer yet?

Good morning, Firepups! Thanks for the news and links, BT. I sure hope we don’t have to put up with more Duggar news over the next few weeks. Of course, I am already sick unto death of the “horse race” campaign news.

And I hope TX can dry out. I heard more t-storms are on the way there.

  6. Boxturtle
    May 29, 2015 at 8:21 am

Yeah, the flooding in Texas has resulted in climate deniers having to shut up or (worse) address the events in light of their beliefs. The Texas politicians in the Presidential race have it the worst. As is only just.

I expect denial to start to fade. The entire point of it was to give the rich folks time to move their money around and they’ve done that. Only folks supporting denial are folks making money off of carbon like the Koch’s.

The next big thing will be “Yeah, but it’ll cost too much and you’ll have to pay it”. Americans are very sensitive to any price increases for energy and a politicians who campaigns on more expensive energy will lose.

Solar will be cheaper energy, but will have a high up front cost. And consumers better be prepared to be billed up front for that.

Boxturtle (Frankly, I’d rather keep coal than keep fission)

  7. Ruth
    May 29, 2015 at 8:23 am

Cleanup costs, as in plugging oil wells, should be figured in the costs, then it would make solar and wind energy among the only good prospects.

After a miserable week, I’m ready for it to be over. Was tickled pink this morning about the news that from all appearances, former speaker Hastert is apparently a crook. Also happy that the Duggar herd and their links to the GOP is making for much amusement, except for the poor girls on the receiving end of the abuse. Wonder if Huckabee would be so forgiving if the family involved were poor and black. And damn it to hell, leave the giant squid alone. Must we kill everything? And thanks BT for your post, and good morning to firepups already here and those yet to come. As happy as a clam to be “oldhippiejan” again. A lovely gentleman named “dick c” sent me step by step instructions on what to do. I don’t recall seeing him on Over Easy, so maybe he is one of the afternoon people and was browsing earlier comments and discovered my dilemma. So “dick c” if you happen to see this, thanks bunches.

    1) Duggar Scandal? Who is Duggar, and why should I care?

    2) Water bills going up $5? Come to Portland, where only $5 increase would be a relief.

Good morning msmolly. I understand that Fox news has dedicated less than two minutes to the story on the Duggars if you can stand to watch that schtuff.
As Ruth said upthread she is “getting a chuckle out of seeing the ratwing showing its true colors.”
Grab the popcorn, this is going to be fun to watch as each day brings another ratwing (thanks Ruth) candidate into the mix.

Absolutely those costs should be included. And properly estimated. But solar and wind have costs, too. Efficient solar panels have lots of heavy metals in them and will likely have to be treated as hazardous when decommissioned. Ditto the oil cooled transformers associated with any wind farm.

Even so, if properly accounted, solar and wind should be cheaper.

Have you noticed how environmentally concious Fox has become on Soalr power? Lots of stories about birds flinh into the beams and being ashed. Or about flying into turbine blades. Maybe it’s just me, but I never noticed this concern for wildlife when if came to building a waste dump or an oil well.

Good morning, pups. Today we have Brooks and Krugman. Bobo has decided to wax poetic (or, rather, have other people wax poetic) about “The Small, Happy Life. He burbles that in this first batch of personal takes on how some readers found purpose in life, a surprising theme emerged. Oh, lawdy, that implies that there will be more… In the comments “HeyNorris” from Paris had this to say: “It’s becoming alarmingly apparent that Mr. Brooks sees himself as Professor Pangloss, and us Tonstant Weaders as his Candides. Well, this Candide is ready to fwow up.” Prof. Krugman, in “The Insecure American,” says a new study on the financial well-being of U.S. households shows just how little room for error there is for many of us.

    HERE they are, and

    HERE is Krugman’s blog.

The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got your favorite omelet this morning. I’m running late, and dashing out to get the weekly grocery shopping done. Have a great day.

Good to see you as well Canyon 2, and thanks for the kind compliment. Yes, IL does seem to have difficulty finding an honest candidate, but on the bright side you don’t live in IN where taxpayers now have to foot the bill for a PR firm to attempt to make Indiana seem not so mean spirited after the RFRA fiasco.

  20. Ruth
    May 29, 2015 at 8:45 am

No concern for oiled pelicans and cormorants, which are downright common in comparison. General disruption of habitat from drilling has yet to be addressed publicly. Yep, selective concern for wildlife.

We’ll be putting up with Duggar news for weeks. I think there’s still legal exposure to them for the molestations and their actions in covering it up. And the Dem’s will flog this one to death.

I think (MiB will correct me) that this is one of the rare occasions where the SoL is not absolute and the clock actually starts when the law becomes aware of the crime. I’m pretty sure that the SoL for obstruction and the SoL for conspiracy to commit Obstruction haven’t lapsed in any case.

I’d like to see them charged, but they’re in the deep south surrounded by powerful supporters. I dunno that the AG (s) with jurisdiction will have the intestinal fortitude to file charges.

I’m gonna start a scrubbing company. Our job would be whenever a major political prop like the Duggars gets tagged, we go out and scrub all the photos and comments that connect the felon with the politicians.

Those poor girls are defending their abuser when they’re permitted to speak. And they’re still in the custody of the persons who did the abuse and covered up the abuse. In a rational world, those girls would have been moved to foster care.

Huck would be forgiving if the family was poor, black and CONSERVATIVE.

Nobody fishes the giant squid, they’re inedible due to very high concentrations of ammonia in their flesh. The ones that get caught are usually feeding on whatever the fisherman was attempting to catch. Most colossal squids have been caught/sighted eating toothfish caught by longlines. Very annoying to the fishermen!

Pence is really scared still about fallout. Supposedly, the NFL presented him with a list of cities OUTSIDE Indiana that would PAY to have the Colts relocate. And the Reds made it clear they could move their AAA team out of Indy with no trouble at all.

Speculation around Illinois is that it was before he was a legislator and happened while he was a football/wrestling coach at Yorkville H.S..
Must have been a pretty serious allegation that he was willing to risk paying 3.5 million in hush money.
Cannot wait for the details to come out as he was a jerk and his “Hastert Rule” was a lot of BS in the House.

Duggar = religious whackjob with 19 kids courted by GOP politicians to shore up their cred with the other far right religious whackos. A tool, in other words. You should care because it makes GOPers look hypocritical. Because it should result in a hateful show being cancelled. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY BECAUSE THOSE VICTIMS AND THEIR SISTERS ARE STILL IN THE POSSESSION OF THE MOLESTER AND HIS PROTECTORS.

$5 is nothing. Figure for every percentage point increase in the amount of Desal water in the mix, the average bill will go up about a dollar.

Yeah, but gee, IN passed right to work laws, privatized education, business taxes are practically non-existent. All this was supposed to bring jobs swarming to IN. Still waiting for that to happen. Pence and the grinning assholes present when he signed this RFRA nonsense should foot the bill, not taxpayers, but I know that’s not the way it works. Being a Hoosier, I’m supposed act like one. Given the moronic stuff they do and don’t do, this old woman wouldn’t mind seeing IN fall in ruins. It is corrupt as hell and nor one is interested in changing. The legislature passed an ethics reform bill this past session. Sounds real pretty, but full of loopholes. We all know they have no “ethics” to begin with.

  45. Molly
    May 29, 2015 at 9:30 am

Rachel Maddow had a lengthy segment on Hastert’s indictment on last night’s show (I watched the segment this morning) and it sounds to me like the “it” dates back to his high school wrestling coach days. I am thinking something like the Penn State Jerry Sandusky scandal. Rachel did not AT ALL suggest anything of that sort, and if it unfair to Hastert to make that mental leap, then I apologize. But it’s what came to mind.

Obviously, about the girls being molested. We hear about it with the Duggars because they are a TV phenom. Many more molested and worse we don’t hear about.

I really can’t, no, won’t wrap my brain around such drivel. The sins committed in the name of god are legion. Then it become hubris, and hubris is celebrated.

No, I doubt a desal plant is coming here any time soon. That is, if we can keep Hanford from finally contaminating the entire Columbia basin. The nearest salt water is about 90 miles from Portland.

Instead of relying on Hanford to radiate the water, City Council is spending close to a bil on building tanks in which water from the Columbia will be stored in times of low water in Bull Run. These wells have Radon, and now, instead of this gas dissipating from the open reservoirs, it will get into the homes big time, through showers, dishwashing etc.

What does Radon and Plutonium have in common?

    They are both alpha emitters.

Leaving soon for the test. It’s short, the bigger time demand is getting there and back.

But why wait so long after Dennis left as speaker to hit him up for money? What new in DNA testing came around at around the same time? Or maybe a child grew up and learned who their father was and was told who their father was? But giving over a million dollars in blackmail seems a bit excessive to cover up a kid something else went on. Unsolved crimes in that area and nearby towns or counties from the time period mentioned by Rachel might explain it. Even when I was growing up small town Illinois we went to nearby towns, counties looking for something to do.

Deep water squid tend to be full of ammonia, so none of them are really edible. I think the largest edible squid is the Humboldt, mantle length about 6 ft.

I dunno if it’s big moneuy, or the threat of offending massive numbers of fundies who see nothing wrong with what happened or feel it should be forgiven anyway.

If every car in California ran on fuel cells powered by hydrogen made from sea water then lets say 10 million cars go through 10 gallons of hydrogen a week (52 weeks in a year) if only 50% of that hydrogen recombined with oxygen immediately then California would have X amount of new water. There are several Non Platinum fuel cells in development.

    IF.

Reality is that fuel cells are still years away from widespread commercial use, especially in cars. And there’s no hydrogen infrastructure. Calif can’t wait that long, they needed their desal plants two years ago.

Those non-Pt fuel cells are really cool. Last I read, operating temperatures were a problem for them, but that’s solvable.

Holy Crap any bets the GOP Presidential hopefuls paid the Duggars for the photo ops or gave them a favor of some kind? Also “What did Josh Duggar do for a living before becoming the executive director of Family Research Council Action? What qualified him to run a multi-million dollar Washington, D.C. lobbying firm?

He was a used car salesman.”

No college that job alone looks like a favor from someone who funds the Family Research council and which GOP presidential candidate did they give the most money too? I’m betting a Fundy like Rick S

“Obviously, about the girls being molested. We hear about it with the Duggars because they are a TV phenom.”

No its because they are tv that Dept of Children and Family services have not taken all the kids from the home and or demanded the son stay away from all the females in his family no matter their age. Also note details are being kept to a minimum normally prosecutor’s leak details on cases like this to see get news coverage and flush out more victims. Next non family members were raped why have they not launched a civil suit? Someone paid them off the only people who the Duggars know with that much cash are GOP presidential hopefuls and their billionaire moneymen. Also Child Molester stories are news not drivel nobody feels safe until those guys get behind bars Rick S’s dog better watch it.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if TLC or the GOP paid Duggars travel expenses to those rally’s. They all know they need to suck up to the fundies to survive the primaries for long.

Boxturtle (Used Car salesman certainly qualifies someone to run for office)

“spring 2015, the system, equipped with an electrolyzer from Siemens, will convert surplus electricity from wind farms to hydrogen. The hydrogen will then be stored locally in tankers or fed directly into the natural gas grid for subsequent power or heat generation. In this way, it will be possible to store electricity from renewable sources over longer periods of time” http://www.siemens.com/press/en/feature/2014/corporate/2014-05-energiepark-mainz.php?content%5B%5D=CC&content%5B%5D=I

If we gave non Pt fuel cells half the tax breaks, government subsidies we give oil and natural gas we would have a non Pt fuel cell ready for production by now. As to cost if we factor in just how much California needs water and how much water would be created every year by fuel cell cars the cost of fuel cell cars very well might be worth it with platinum fuel cells.

Late to the party. Going to be late for everything today.

23 dead in Texas from climate change related weather – 1200 dead in Qatar building World Cup facilities, climate change can’t do anything good there – 1800 dead in India from climate change related heat wave.

    Yikes!

They specifically said it was from Illinois coach days pre political days Illinois suburbs were just starting to grow then everyone knows everyone in a small town. I agree its probably sex but the victim is not protected every old timer probably still remembers Dennis’s favorite man or woman. I would be looking at girls who left high school because they got pregnant from around this time. Because the payments began about the time a son or daughter would come of age, see his birth certificate needed for a job and or his mom decided to tell him who his dad was.

I have to assume that the German natural gas system is different. Hydrogen cannot just be added to our natural gas pipelines, the danger of leaks or ignition is higher than Methane and the pipes simply aren’t designed for it. Hydrogen can seep out of holes that methane doesn’t even notice.

Boxturtle (Imagine the natural gas furnace that gets a big shot of Hydrogen)

Good morning, BoxTurtle and firepups. thank you for the post ‘n host.
I have a new campaign in addition to “corps are NOT companies;” fox tv is not “fox news.” FOX is a tv broadcaster just as CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, et. al. are.

FOX TV may have some “news” programming such as flooding in Texas, but it is primarily entertainment, opinion and propaganda just as ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN provide.
We have truely fallen into Orwell ‘s Brave New World much to my dismay.

They — the infamous 1% and their hirelings — don’t give a damn about stopping climate change. The real money to be made is in mitigation.

  84. May 29, 2015 at 11:43 am

“It’s because they are on TV”….exactly!

Child molestation is not to which I referred as drivel. TV reality is and is what I don’t watch. Therefore, there is nothing for me to note. The rest is what comes with it and since I don’t watch it….

Apparently the World wealthies care more about soccer than anything else. If the MSM worked properly FIFA scandal wouldn’t even be a top ten news story.

    I’m back, all coffeed up.

The test went fast. I watched the screen and conversed with the operator about the process. Remarkable.

I’ll know Mon or Tues, but it looks pretty good so far.

  87. May 29, 2015 at 12:03 pm

I was really groogy walking out of that test. No water, coffee food etc whatsoever after midnight. Just because they didn’t want any tummy grumbles with which to deal.
