Suzanne

I am a host of Late Late Night FDL music and cartoon posts in addition to spending most evenings behind the FDL backstage curtain flipping levers. Used to be a practicing heterosexual but now it appears that I am just a consultant. Avid reader since teaching myself how to read when four. Navy brat and first born so always thinking of the consequences. Double Irish so I usually got caught. Turned my misspent youth around and became that scary thing in your rear view mirror. Retired from the Fremont (California) Police Department after 24 years of sworn and non-sworn duties, including Patrol and the Crimes Against Persons Unit. Currently living on the North Oregon Coast with Token, cutest dog in the world (10 lb category), where I enjoy taking non-crime scene photographs, writing at my own blog, TwoTonGreenBlog, and working backstage at Firedoglake.

g’evening pups… gonna apologize in advance if i miss someone coming in or a comment that is in reply to one i made… gonna take some time to get used to this new comment system

  • TalkingWarrior

    G’evening, Suzanne and cmk.

Can’t believe my luck tonight. Got in with no wait at all for Disqus to load – very unlike the 21+ reloads I had to go through on an earlier post today just to get Disqus to load.

Anyone have any thoughts on why Disqus can frequently take infernally long to load? Is it just me and my device?

(I usually give up long before I hit Reload 21 times. Just wanted to see how long it would take if I really tried.)

Hi Suz..really kind of hot here these days. In the middle and upper 80s. OY !
But suppose to cool down later on.

  • Suzanne

hey dancingrabbit… how ya doing tonight? i have no idea how disqus works… tis all new to me

  • Chris Maukonen
  • Suzanne

hey cmauk — hot here too. got up to 79.7 in the shade on my front porch but it was 84 in town. starting tomorrow we have a chance of intermittent showers in the afternoon and those showers are possible pretty much all week.

  • Chris Maukonen

Same here. Showers initially then storms and thunderstorms then down into the 60s.

  • Chris Maukonen

Got two muffin fans in my window blowing nice cool air from outside.

  • TalkingWarrior

Doing good. Our Deep South humidity of the past two days dropped dramatically this afternoon, and the temp after mid-80s yesterday didn’t even break 80 today. 🙂

    TW

  • Suzanne
  • Suzanne

dancingrabbit — do ya have that deep south humidity because you are in the south?

  • Chris Maukonen

I think you get the humidity once to get south of the Mason Dixon line. 🙂

The humidity in Florida is a big reason why I left there. Only month that wasn’t humid was February.

Oh, yeah. If not Deep in the Heart of Dixie, more like Deep in the Soul of Dixie.

This Disqus screen name comes from the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek, which I like to remember as serving to save the Natchez Trace, now the awesomely beautiful Natchez Trace Parkway, which runs from near the river at Natchez, Miss., up through Tupelo and into Tennessee.

My FDL screen name – Talking Warrior – was already taken at Disqus.

Both are nods to the Choctaw lands I now live near. My NA heritage is most likely Chickasaw, the Choctaw’s sister tribe, who fought to the death rather than leave their lands. The Choctaw negotiated away the biggest land acquisition by treaty (at Dancing Rabbit Creek) that the US ever made, but managed to keep a really tiny percentage of their lands – where today they have casinos, which fund lots of great, innovative medical and educational programs among other progressive projects.

Never made it to Woodstock. Did not have any motivation to go. Failed to see how you could change the world™ with entertainers that got 50 thousand dollars a show.

  • Suzanne

tw! now i know who you are *laughing* wasn’t sure if it was me having a senior moment or your name changed due to the new commenting system.

  • Suzanne

i never made it to woodstock either cmauk. i was going to go to altamont with my boyfriend but i came down with mumps on the other side* 3 days before. hindsight made me realize i was lucky– my dad would have never let me go to another concert if i had been at altamont — the stabbing death was all over the local news with screaming headlines about the hells angels

*had them on one side only when i was in elementary school

  • Pluto

I just posted a comment on that topic, WW: I remember this holocaust….

I don’t see why Disqus forces a name change. Pluto is ubiquitous. I’ll have to look into that. Did you log into FDL first as WW, then go to Disqus?

    Anyone?

  • Chris Maukonen

I had a mump in elementary school. My cousin took my brother and me to see Woodstock at a drive in.

  • Pluto

Hi Suzanne. Thanks for hosting tonight.

    Sup Firedogs?

  • Suzanne

hey pluto how ya doing tonight? i know there are some pups who disqus won’t let them use their fdl name because someone else has it as their name in their system. others are forced to use their disqus name instead of their fdl name (homeroid is now akbob)… i am unaware of any was to fix these issues

  • Suzanne

i saw it at the drive in too iirc. just aint the same dood

  • Chris Maukonen

    Concerts I have seen.
    It’s A Beautiful Day – Musicarnival
    Frank Zappa – downtown Cleveland
    Joan Beaz – Downtown Cleveland
Tiny Alice [local group] – various venues including somebodies side yard in Cleveland

    That’s it.

  • Chris Maukonen

    I’m logged in using FB.

  • Suzanne

cmauk and i are co-hosting…. the ln tag team as it were. that way we can also be free to do other things we need to do — ln has a long time commitment for hosting.

  • TalkingWarrior

    Which was your favorite?

I went to the Flats Festival once. All the clubs in the warehouse area of the Flats had a one time fee thing and got into all of them. After a few drinks the local cover artists and bands begin to sound good.

I think when that happens it means you are too drunk to even walk home.

  • Suzanne
  • Pluto

    Well, thanks to cmauk, too.

This seems like a good place/forum to help people trying to get their voices back through Disqus.

The Baez concert I went to was just her and her guitar. During the concert some clowns in the back of the auditorium were making noise.

She stopped. Got up and yelled at the top of her lungs.

    SHUT THE FUCK UP !

    It was great. 🙂

When I tried to sign in as TW through FDL, I was told repeatedly it wasn’t a valid sign-in, I forget what reason was given. Don’t recall how I signed up via Disqus, but new name was accepted (with a pathetically weak password – you’d think Disqus would require at least eight characters).

Are you notified (in the comment bubble next to your name) when your comments are uprated?

  • TalkingWarrior

It’s a thought. I only turn cookies on for FDL, but, of course, too often forget to turn them off when leaving this site.

Clearing them might help. Wish there were some way to delete/erase them, but of course not.

    TW

  • Suzanne
  • Suzanne

pluto, i sort by ‘newest’….. also there is a grayed out text thingie that tells me when there is a new comment below that if ya click on it, takes ya to that comment. that is different that the blue banner of new comments

  • TalkingWarrior

Disqus is behaving differently for me than just yesterday. Then it auto-updated without these floating notices, which, by the way usually don’t do anything when I click on them, but sometimes they do.

Ran across this chart today. It seems, according to World Survey Values Americans aren’t as proud of their country as they used to be.

    http://www.zerohedge.com/sites/default/files/images/user3303/imageroot/2015/05/20150508_pride_0.jpg

Only 56% of Americans said they were “very proud” of their nation, according to World Values Survey data, down from over 62% in 2009 (71.1% in 2004, and 77% in 1999). America now ranks only 30th in the world for national pride.

    Such a head-scratcher….

Guess we’ll never know who hits #99 anymore. 🙁

First heard that on WMUM. An FM station in Palm Beach that from 6PM till mid night was run by these long hairs that played what ever they felt like. Country Joe, Arlow Guthry, Firesign Theatre, Jefferson Aiplane …. what ever. Even played a black mass one night at midnight.

Got a call that night from a lady complaining about the black mass, the DJ asked “What are you doing up at midnight listening to it ?”

    Ya got to love it.

gorgeous! 84 in town – 79 in the shade on my porch. got sweaty when out visiting with my new neighbor across the street. she gave me a baby rose and a clump of an unknown bulb. she was digging out the old raised bed to replace flowers with fruits and veggies. she was told what the bulbs were but can’t remember the name *laughing* said she would give me a bunch more and even offered to come over and dig a hole for me to take them *more laughing*

Speaking of Woodstock, I never did drugs. A least not intentionally. However when I was a student assistant in the Physics and Chemistry Dept Lab, a chick who was also an assistant brought in some chocolate chip cookies with pot in them. Just gave me a head ache.

Years later when I watch the Barney Miller episode with the brownies laced with hash the part where Harris says

“I think these brownies have hash in them Barn. I mean judging by the way I feel” Barney says “Takes these down to the lab and have them analysed” then to Harris “You’re right. Laced with Hashish”
Harris’s reply “And I made a pig of myself.”

I simply howled and I mean howled.

  • Suzanne

i loved that episode!!! whatta hoot (and very risque for the time)

  • Pluto

    Speaking of Soul Sacrifices:

You don’t have to know much about the “trade” deal called the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) to be more than a little suspicious.

Posted at Like the Dew blog:

First, there are the very peculiar bedfellows. Supporting the TPP are President Obama and most Congressional Republicans, the same Republicans who’ve vehemently opposed his every initiative for the past six and one-half years.

Against the TPP are most (but not all) Congressional Democrats, Ford Motor Company, virtually all trade unions and environmental groups, watchdog groups such as Public Citizen, and usual Obama allies such as Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren and Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown, who, in a testy open letter to the President on April 25, called for greater transparency on the TPP.

Furthermore, when asked to lend his support for so-called “Fast Track” authority for the TPP, Obama water-carrier and former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid chafed, “So the answer is not only no, but hell no.”

Also opposed: liberal icon Noam Chomsky, Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders, Republican hopeful Mike Huckabee, many Tea-Party groups, and conservative Republican editorialist and former presidential candidate Patrick Buchanan. Conspicuous by silence: Hillary Rodham Clinton.

What’s going on here? Why the strange alliances?

Or, as I like to say:

You can’t share a bed with the devil without getting your private bits singed.
