Over Easy: Diabetes

Yep..I am a type 2 diabetic.  And I am a smoker as well. Will not go into that except to say I really enjoy smoking and have ever since I started when I was around 12 or so. But be that as it may [ and it may], I have been diabetic since in my 50s.  I use to be able to control it with diet and them medication – Metformin – but the dosage became to high and I was having some bad side effects from it. I am now on Glipizide but even with that my blood sugar is very high. I am supposed to get an appointment with an endocrinologist but my heath care provider even mentioned insulin therapy.

None of this surprises me now. My aunt on my father’s side had type 2 diabetes for years and this recent study shows a genetic factor that some Finns have that predisposes them to type 2 diabetes. Even though I am only Finnish on my father’s side, it would seem I may have inherited the condition.  So far I have had nor major and few minor symptoms of diabetes though my current medication does improve my overall physical condition.

I may have to be on insulin therapy. Way it goes but there are now so many ways and kinds of insulin that it boggles the mind. My drug insurance even lists an inhaled version. Who’d a think it. So I will see what transpires on all of this. A nice thing is that I can have secure email exchanges with my provider over their web site, which is convenient as well as request refills on prescriptions.

Adding to all of this, I have had arthritis for quite some time. [Thanks granddad]
