Over Easy: Risks
Risk is the potential of losing something of value. Values (such as physical health, social status, emotional well being or financial wealth) can be gained or lost when taking risk resulting from a given action, activity and/or inaction, foreseen or unforeseen. Risk can also be defined as the intentional interaction with uncertainty. Uncertainty is a potential, unpredictable, unmeasurable and uncontrollable outcome, risk is a consequence of action taken in spite of uncertainty
Risk perception is the subjective judgement people make about the severity and/or probability of a risk, and may vary person to person. Any human endeavour carries some risk, but some are much riskier than others.
That is what Wikipedia says about risks. We in this country have become risk averse. Not just in economic endeavours but in most aspects of our lives. Financial institutions and corporations want the financial situations risk free. Soccer moms and pops want the little ones in a risk free environment. The government wants the economy risk free.
So we try to make everything free of risks and/or minimize them. We also use risks to further our agendas. Blowing them up all out of proportion or minimizing them. The MIC wants us to believe we are at great risk of the current set of evil doers. The right wants us to to believe we are at great risk of losing our freedoms. The Left wants us to believe we are a great risk of our health by eating certain foods or using certain products.
The pro marijuana crowd wants us to believe that it is generally risk free, but that ain’t so. The medical establishment loves to expose the risk of particular behaviors on your health and at the same time playing down others like your genetic make up, family history and overall life style.
But as it is said above one must also evaluate the risks associated with any endeavour. Are the risks worth taking? What will/do I get [if anything] out of them? Are the risks real or are they made up from rumours and half truths? What is really involved with taking a risky chance? Contrary to popular belief a risk is NOT something one should take just on the spur of the moment without some initial knowledge. Jumping in blindly.
But we need to take risks to accomplish anything and push beyond where we are. We need to allow our children and friends to take risks to learn and grow.
Just think of where we would be if we did not take any risks. If our ancestors had not taken any risks. Most certainly would not have that cell phone in you ear or PC on your desk.
By eliminating risks or trying to use them to sway people one way or another for our own purpose, we take the adventure out of life.
