Late Night FDL: Junior Dad

Lou Reed & Metallica – Junior Dad

Lou Reed’s widow at this weekend’s Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction…

David Bowie has hailed Lou Reed’s Metallica collaboration Lulu as his “greatest work”, according to the late rocker’s widow.

Reed’s experimental project with the metal band was his final album prior to his death in 2013, but the 2011 record flopped in the charts and received a slew of negative reviews from critics.

However, Reed’s widow Laurie Anderson has revealed reclusive music icon Bowie reached out to her after her husband’s death to talk to her about Lulu.

Speaking at Reed’s Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction on Saturday, Anderson said, “One of (Reed’s) last projects was his album with Metallica. And this was really challenging, and I have a hard time with it. There are many struggles and so much radiance. And after Lou’s death, David Bowie made a big point of saying to me, ’Listen, this is Lou’s greatest work. This is his masterpiece. Just wait, it will be like (Bowie’s musical period) Berlin. It will take everyone a while to catch up.’

“I’ve been reading the lyrics and it is so fierce. It’s written by a man who understood fear and rage and venom and terror and revenge and love. And it is raging. Anyone heard Lou sing (Lulu track) Junior Dad will never forget the experience of that song, torn out of the Bible. This was rock and roll taken to whole new levels.”
