Hagel Floats Sending More Troops To Iraq

Outgoing Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel has floated the idea of sending even more US troops to Iraq. Though there are already set to be approximately 4,500 troops in Iraq to help train and advise the disastrous Iraqi military, Hagel thinks more may be necessary.
The Iraqi military collapsed when confronted by ISIS forces which meant a great deal of US military equipment is now in ISIS’ hands and is currently being bombed by the US military. What’s left of the Iraqi military along with the Iraqi government is begging the US military to come back and fight off the ISIS insurgency for them.
Of course, it remains a question as to whether there would have even been an ISIS insurgency had the Shitte dominated government not discriminated against the Sunnis which opened the door for a Salafist militant group like ISIS to find so much local support. Nor is it clear that if the US bailed out the gang in Baghdad by defeating ISIS the same events would not happen all over again.
Outgoing Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said in an interview on Friday the United States might eventually need to send non-combat ground troops to Iraq to help turn back Islamic State forces.
Hagel, who announced his resignation under pressure in November, told CNN all options must be considered in Iraq, including sending troops for non-combat roles such as gathering intelligence and locating Islamic State targets. “I think it may require a forward deployment of some of our troops …,” he said. “I would say we’re not there yet. Whether we get there or not, I don’t know.”
Forward deployment of “non-combat” troops? Is anyone supposed to take such an absurd statement seriously? The American people want no troops, regardless of whether their assigned task counts as “combat,” to be in the country. These little word games by Team Obama are too clever by half.
There is also the not so hidden fact that all the troops that turned tail and ran when ISIS showed up had been trained by the US military already and decided they would rather not fight. What will more training actually achieve? Nothing. But let’s keep doing the same thing over and over and expect different results.
