Yesterday the media declared that the war in Afghanistan is over. This will, no doubt, be a great surprise to the troops still stationed in Afghanistan who have been ordered by President Obama to fight another year. How exactly most of what would be considered the mainstream media and its new media counterparts came to conclude that the war ended is no mystery – they uncritically rewrote a government press release.

In fact, it was only a month or so ago that the government confirmed that the 2014 withdrawal date had been abandoned and that US forces had at least one more year of combat in the longest war in American history.

Though it was not long until the internet was mocking the Huffington Post, Washington Post, and others for parroting the misleading government line, even mainstream journalists such as James Risen were publicly lamenting how the press got played.

Whether the gross misreporting about the war in Afghanistan “ending” was a result of incompetence or malevolence is hard to know given both are in such abundance in the US mainstream media. In any case, there is no change, perpetual war shall continue to perpetuate.
