The Stupidest Poll Question of the Day

Obama

Dumb Question: “Should President Obama take executive action this year to deal with illegal immigration or should he wait until January for the new Republican Congress to pass legislation on this issue?”

In general I love polls, but they can be a clear example of the ‘garbage in garbage out’ problem. If the poll question is bad it tells you nothing useful and this poll question in the USA Today survey is really bad.

It asked: “Should President Obama take executive action this year to deal with illegal immigration or should he wait until January for the new Republican Congress to pass legislation on this issue?”

It found 46 percent wanted Obama to wait and 42 percent wanted him to act now.

This provides no useful information because this has nothing to do with the situation facing the country. It implies there is a real chance Republican will actually adopt some legislation and there simply isn’t. If there was any hint Congressional Republicans were going to seriously try to pass a immigration reform law, Obama would jump on the chance. Over the past two years, though, Republicans proved immigration reform is not happening.

It is not a question of whether Obama should take immigration action alone or let Congress pass a law. The question is whether Obama should take action or allow nothing to happen. That is the situation we are facing. Finding out the public would like some unicorns does us no good.
