Voices of Rage and Ruin

Protesters in Ferguson gather

“Hands Up, Don’t Shoot!” Peaceful protest in Ferguson.

George Orwell . . .

In the face of pain there are no heroes.

History has proven that over and over again. Oppression crushes the human spirit and makes resistance seem impossible. People live in fear and see no way out of the darkness. But there are times when people are heroic, when they overcome their pain and fear and show us all what moral courage is. We’re seeing it now. The light of moral courage is shining like a beacon in Ferguson, Missouri.

But there is always a backlash when injustice is confronted, when the moral bankruptcy of the authorities is exposed for all of America to see. That backlash is intensifying, it is vile, it is repulsive, it reeks of desperation. The corrupt authorities are the ones who are afraid now, and that fear is blinding them to the consequences of their actions.

I hear hurricanes ablowing,
I know the end is coming soon.
I fear rivers overflowing,
I hear the voice of rage and ruin.

Voices of rage and ruin are blaring from police loudspeakers, one lie after another is being broadcast by the corporate media, they’re good at it, they’ve had plenty of practice, but too many people have seen what’s happening. They know what the cold, hard truth is and so does everyone here—the authorities could have sent that killer cop back to Ferguson in handcuffs, but they sent an army instead.

We’ve seen mindless enforcers of the police state commanding peaceful protesters to disperse as tear gas canisters explode and sonic weapons howl. We’ve seen journalists threatened, journalists arrested, we’re seeing the character assassination of another young black, the slandering of the victim again, the same old orgy of finger-pointing on Fox News–the dead kid deserved it, he had it coming, that brave officer had no choice but to shoot him ten times.

Defiant citizens in the heartland of America have seen enough . . .

Images like that are haunting the politicians and the media elites, they’re haunting the CEO’s in corporate boardrooms, the banksters on Wall Street, the generals in the Pentagon and the racists in every police department in this country. They’re afraid. They have reason to be.

I’m not advocating revolution, no one at Firedoglake is advocating revolution, but a revolution is coming. It won’t be requesting permission from high and mighty “lawmakers” or “judges” or President Prettywords or anyone else in power to come pounding on their doors with a message from Reality, with a message from History, with a message from the abused, exploited, and betrayed citizens of this ravaged republic.

Millions of Americans have had their fill of puppet leaders with lies on their teleprompters and plutocrat paychecks in their pockets. The militarization of the police has been exposed for all to see, trust in government has hit rock-bottom, trust in the corporate media has hit rock bottom, this country is heading for economic collapse and everyone knows it. Revolution is coming. It knows the way, it doesn’t need directions, it’s been here before, it’s been everywhere before, it knows who the thieves are, it knows who the enablers are, it knows who the propaganda peddlers are, it knows who the corrupt politicians are, it knows where they live, it knows where we all live, and it’s coming.

The same conditions that triggered revolutions in the past and toppled corrupt governments are evident all across this country, they’re evident in every town and city in this land of bigots and bankers and blackmail, where citizens have no rights, where day has become night, where ignorance has become strength, where corporate propaganda never stops blaring across the airwaves of the media conglomerates.

The corrupt systems of oppression that ignited revolutions in the past are different from the corrupt system that oppresses us, but the consequences are the same. The faces of the political and economic elites are different, but their abusive agenda is the same. The names of the oppressed are different, but their contempt for the government and intensifying anger are the same. The outrages never end, the lies never stop, the corruption just keeps spreading like a virus through the bloodstream of corporate capitalism.

I’m not advocating revolution any more than a Richter Scale advocates earthquakes, but it doesn’t matter whether I advocate it or not, revolutions become inevitable when government abuses of power become pervasive, when corruption becomes entrenched in the economic and political systems, when leaders betray the people time and time again, when conditions simply cannot be tolerated any longer

I don’t know if revolution is a year away, or two years away, or five years away, or ten years away, but it’s coming. I don’t know where it will start, but it’s coming. I don’t know whether it will be bloodless or bloody, but it’s coming. I don’t know if it will make things better or worse, but it’s coming.

If you aren’t ready for it, get ready for it, because it’s coming whether you want it to or not, its coming and there will be no stopping it. When that storm hits, it will blow corrupt governments away, it will blow the profiteers away, it will blow the bankers away, it will blow the corporate criminals away, it will blow the false values of the past away, it will shake this country to its foundations, it will shatter its hierarchies of power, it will be the death of corporate capitalism and the painful birth of a new age.
