DREAMer Erika Andiola Offers to Let Steve King Tear Up Her DACA Card

DREAM activists Erika Andiola and Cesar Vargas confronted Rep. Steve King (R-IA) in a restaurant about his opposition to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) memo, which defers deportation of some immigrants who migrated to the United States as children. In the video, Andiola offers King the opportunity to tear up her DACA card.

In the confrontation, Andiola tells King that she has been raised in the U.S. and is a graduate of Arizona State University. King repeatedly asks her if she’s a drug smuggler, suggesting that his opposition to suspending deportation of people under the DACA is solely based on his desire to expel drug smugglers.

How many people covered under the DACA are drug smugglers vs. students? According to King in an intereview with NewsMax, the ratio is 100 to 1:

For every one that’s a valedictorian, there’s another 100 out there that they weigh 130 pounds and they’ve got calves the size of cantaloupes because they’re hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert. Those people would be legalized with the same act.

Evidently King didn’t even need to ask Andiola if she was a drug smuggler, he just could’ve had a gander at her legs.

King objects to being “ambushed” by Andiola and Vargas, which he was — but take no responsibility for being an elected official who is attempting to “ambush” them in Congress and have them deported. The fact that his actions directly impact the people he is speaking to doesn’t seem to occur to him.

In the end King refuses Andiola’s offer to tear up her DACA card. He just keeps asking her in an extremely patronizing and condescending tone “do you speak English.”

It really is almost painful to watch.
