Late Night: McCain Versus McCain, Iraq Edition
By now most people know about how John McCain and a lot of other Republicans (and even a few opportunistic Democratic dingbats like Dianne Feinstein) have been turning themselves into pretzels trying to deny that they ever supported Bowe Bergdahl’s release, much less reamed out Obama for not moving more quickly to free Sgt. Bergdahl, America’s last POW overseas.
Another week, another event for McCain and his fellow flippers in the GOP to change positions on. This time, it’s Iraq.
Eager to change the subject now that he’s been caught spinning like a top on Bowe Bergdahl, McCain’s spent the past week yammering about how wrong President Obama was to withdraw troops from Iraq. But as HuffPo’s Andrew Hart notes, back in 2010 McCain congratulated former President Bush on setting in motion the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq, even sending a tweet to that effect. Furthermore:
As Paul Waldman of The Washington Post notes, there is reason to take McCain and other Republicans’ criticism of Obama with a grain of salt: they were often wrong about Iraq when the case was being made for the invasion of 2003. MSNBC’s “All In With Chris Hayes” put together a video compilation of John McCain being wrong on Iraq.
Geez, they’ve spun so much and for so long, they must be perpetual motion machines.
