People keep pinging me on Facebook saying

We can’t get onto FDL, what’s up?

Well, here’s the deal: For some time now Firedoglake has been under escalating DDoS attacks which knock us off line.

These attacks mean you can’t access our site to read our reports on whistleblowers like Chelsea Manning, Thomas Drake, Peter Van Buren and John Kiriakou. Or Kevin Gosztola’s Dissenter.  You can’t find important news and views on LGBT issues, civil liberties, domestic spying, marijuana and drug policy, Occupy, WikiLeaks, genetically modified foods, prison reform, elections–perspectives often ignored by mainstream media and other websites.

On a personal note, with these DDoS attacks,  our readers have difficulty participating in FDL Movie Night where  filmmakers come online to discuss their movies with the public. Anyone who’s logged into FDL can participate in Movie Night –and our past guests range from Oscar winners and nominees to punk rock icons. No other site has a weekly online chat with filmmakers…

Along with political and social reporting, FDL does live blogging of the Oscars and other award shows. We have a lively Book Salon and report on arts and culture.

So I’m making a bleg here: Please help us stay online by making a donation. The cost of recovering from (and preventing further) DDoS attacks is crippling Firedoglake. And that seems to be the goal of whoever/whatever is behind these attacks (The attacks also mean we’re doing something right and that somebody/something is pissed off at this plucky little site that has been kicking ass for almost a decade!).

Every dollar helps. As Jane Hamsher–who was my maid of honor at my wedding 15 years ago, showing that friendship lasts longer than marriages!–writes:

Our willingness to go against the beltway grain and cover issues in the way we do is no doubt what has opened us up to attacks, but we’re not going to back down. We need our community to band together and defend our publication’s existence and work.

We have a terrific community here at FDL that has always been extremely generous about supporting us when we’re in need. And if we cannot overcome these technical hurdles and pay these bills, the attackers could be successful in silencing us and we could be in serious jeopardy.

Please donate here.
