I love Netflix. It has changed every area of my life in a way that I never dreamed was even possible. I could write a dozen or so blogs on the dramatic impact Netflix has had on my life, but I will focus this one on diet and longevity.

I don’t even remember what I was watching at the time when a list of other suggested videos popped up on the screen. One was Tapped. Tapped is about the bottled water industry. It’s also about the fact that the water that comes out of your faucet is much safer to drink than any brand of bottled water. I was absolutely stunned to learn the bottled water we have all been drinking is completely unregulated by the federal government. I learned that the plastic bottles themselves are manufactured with known carcinogens such as benzene.

The next documentary I watched was Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead. This is an amazing story about a guy from Australia who was suffering from a debilitating autoimmune disease. He came to America to document his plan to cure himself by juicing. It worked! I went out and purchased a juicer and began to juice myself and I was astonished at how much better I felt.

Next, I watched was Forks Over Knives. In this video I learned two very shocking and scientifically irrefutable facts. One, your body needs dramatically less protein than we have been lead to believe. The second was that drinking milk and consuming dairy products actually makes your bones weaker. I don’t expect many people to believe that but when you watch the videos and see the scientific data you will become a believer.

Other documentaries I watched were Food Matters, Hungry for Change, Vegucated and Engine 2 Fire Rescue.

I grew up in Texas in the 1950’s. Every night when my dad came home from work we ate dinner at 5:30 and we ate meat. As I grew up I became a barbeque connoisseur. When I traveled I looked for the best barbeque place I could find. I ate beef ribs, pork ribs, brisket, shredded beef sandwiches, shredded pork sandwiches, Chicago style pork shoulder, Memphis style barbeque pork sandwiches and barbeque chicken. I finally decided that the best barbeque in America was from The County Line in Austin, Texas.

After educating myself and watching all of the documentaries on Netflix about diet and cancer prevention and cures, I have become a vegan. I did it effortlessly for the most part. I noticed that in the days immediately after I watched a documentary on diet I consumed a much healthier diet but as time passed I slipped back into my old eating habits. I decided the solution to permanently eating a healthy diet was to inundate myself with the documentaries again.

I began to watch all of the documentaries on diet and cancer prevention over and over and over. I put them all on my iPhone and watched them when I was exercising or listened to them while I was riding my bike. It worked.

I think the single most shocking thing was how it changed my cravings for different foods. I never thought it was possible for me to crave spinach salads, blueberries, blackberries, kale and raw baby carrots.

So here is my advice. If you don’t have Netflix, get it and start to educate yourself on the truth about diet and nutrition. If you have children encourage them to watch some of the documentaries.

Depending on your age, you will likely find that many of the things we were told about food groups, protein and milk are simply not true.

Invest one week of evenings or one weekend watching five to ten exceptional documentaries on diet and maybe you can significantly reduce your chances of developing heart disease or cancer and add a decade or two to your life.
