Secretary Kerry Warns Israel Could Become ‘An Apartheid State’

Palestine peace not apartheid.jpg

Though many former Israeli and American policymakers, perhaps most famously former President Jimmy Carter, have said Israel is already an apartheid State, current Secretary of State John Kerry said Israel risked becoming one if the current peace deal falls through. According to the Daily Beast, Secretary Kerry made the warning at a Trilateral Commission meeting saying “A two-state solution will be clearly underscored as the only real alternative. Because a unitary state winds up either being an apartheid state with second-class citizens—or it ends up being a state that destroys the capacity of Israel to be a Jewish state.”

The remarks have, not surprisingly, led to outrage in the more strident and reactionary quarters of the Zionist community. The Emergency Committee For Israel has already called on Secretary Kerry to resign.

It is no longer enough for the White House to clean up after the messes John Kerry has made. It is time for John Kerry to step down as Secretary of State, or for President Obama to fire him. And it would go a long way toward repairing the damage Kerry has done if his predecessor as Secretary of State, who is the likely Democratic Party nominee for president, explained why this kind of rhetoric had no place in her State Department and why it will have no place in her presidential campaign.

So, according to the Emergency Committee for Israel, not only should Kerry resign but Hillary Clinton should condemn him too or risk damage to her presidential campaign.

For those unaware, the Emergency Committee for Israel is run in part by neoconservative William Kristol, one of the architects of the disastrous Iraq War. Like many of his neocon fellow travelers Kristol predicted minimal resistance to US occupation.

The two-state solution is all but dead anyway which means, if Secretary Kerry’s analysis is correct, Israel will become a unitary apartheid state. Then the question becomes will this change in designation alter the US relationship with Israel?

Can America be formally aligned with – let alone aggressively supportive of – a country practicing apartheid?
