Late Night: Ass Forward
In the immortal words of Sarah Palin, “How’s that workin’ out for ya?”
Not so well these days, would be the answer. Never mind that this looking forward business, when applied to Wall Street, allowed the Teabaggers to (quite legitimately) tar his administration with cronyism and thus lead to the loss of the House in 2010. Now it appears that a much-diminished lame duck presidency is about to end up on the wrong side of a Constitutional crisis of its own making.
Now, I lack the fancy educational pedigrees even our dumbest Presidents all seem to have, but you don’t need a sheepskin from Harvard to suspect that if you let, say torturers, go free, they might cause you trouble later on.
Just like the banksters before them, the sadists are worse than just ungrateful about their undeserved freedom from consequences; emboldened, they now demand humble fealty, and the President is once again in no position to deny it. Once you hand a pair of cufflinks to Jamie Dimon, why wouldn’t John Brennan openly defy the Senate and hide behind you? After all, torture isn’t really all that much worse than fraud and larceny, is it? Especially amongst the well-dressed.
But as the normally obtuse and compliant Sen. Dianne Feinstein “reluctantly” pointed out, this particular dust bunny that needed to be swept under the rug wasn’t the mere garden variety theft and collusion with outlaw industries that never leave an incriminating lump, this was deeply disturbed people, paid by the government to torture other human beings for no discernible reason. No rug can cover that pile.
If Obama’s goal in office was to marry his daughters to Wall Streeters and have a luxurious retirement, then he’ll probably end up a great success, as did more than a few Presidents before him. If this goal involved, even in passing, making America a better place, the CIA torture scandal shows, with disturbing vividness, that that isn’t going to happen.
What has happened is that the likes of Dick Cheney, John Yoo, John Brennan, Mark Thiessen, Jamie Dimon, and on and on, will continue to torment him until he leaves office, leaving a pathetic legacy behind, when all of them should have been rotting in jail.
When Dianne Feinstein, of all people, starts to look like a civil libertarian compared to you, it’s safe to say you fucked up.
