Exchange Signups Reach Four Million
The number of people who have selected plans on the new state or federally run exchanges has reached four million according to the Obama administration. Health and Human Services claims approximately 4 million people have now signed up for a private health insurance plan through the Federal and State-based marketplaces since October 1, but a full enrollment report for the month won’t be out until mid-March.
The blog post from HHS is short on details but presumably this number reflects how many people have selected a plan, not how many people have actually paid a premium. Some will not actually complete the process by mailing in that first check.
This represents only a modest increase from 3.3 million total signups as of the end of January. It is likely, though, that signups will be faster in March because people tend to wait until the last minute to get things done.
While it is unlikely the administration will reach its initial goal of 7 million signups for the year, participation will probably be strong enough to produce decent-sized markets in all the states.
