Schumer Calls GOP’s Bluff on Immigration
Since Republicans are trying to blame their refusal to move forward with immigration reform on the fact that President Obama is taking too many executive actions, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has a great offer for them. They can both pass immigration reform and prevent Obama from having any role in implementing the new law. They just need to set the start date in 2017. On Meet the Press Schumer said:
Well, it’s been a tough week for immigration. But all three, or many of the Republicans have said the following, Speaker Boehner, Mitch McConnell, Paul Ryan, even Jim DeMint, they have said they want to do immigration reform, but they don’t trust the president to enforce the law, particularly the enforcement parts. So there’s a simple solution.
Let’s enact a law this year, but simply not let it actually start till 2017, after President Obama’s term is over. Now I think the rap against him, that he won’t enforce the law is false. He’s supported more people than any other president. But you can actually have the law start in 2017 without doing much violence to it.
This is a masterful political move by Schumer.
On the off chance it works, Schumer gets the immigration reform law he has been after for years.
If Republican don’t go along it clearly shows their latest excuse for inaction is total nonsense. The only reason immigration reform hasn’t been enacted yet is because House Republicans oppose it. Given that regular people don’t follow Congress debates very closely Democrats need to aggressively show who is responsible for this failure.
