The Price of Everything and the Value of Nothing

Dragons steal gold and jewels, you know , from men and elves and dwarves, wherever they can find them; and they guard their plunder as long as they live (which is practically for ever, unless they are killed), and never enjoy a brass ring of it. Indeed they hardly know a good bit of work from a bad, though they usually have a good notion of the current market value; and they can’t make a thing for themselves, not even mend a little loose scale of their armour. – The Hobbit

This is the state we have become, I’m afraid. Especially the elites and the bourgeoisie and peti  bourgeoisie, though we are all guilty of it to some degree or another. You come across it all the time. What ever happens it seems there is some dollar value put on it. Or Euros or Yen or Yan or whatever. From automobile tires to natural disasters. Everything now has a price attached to it.

Even people’s lives have a price attached to them somewhere. Health care – how much will it cost ? How much is it costing the country? The wars are put in dollars and cents, rather than lives and destruction and disruption and misery. Car crashes and train crashes. Even climate change.

I think we have forgotten a few things. That people got along just fine without money for a long time. That is was the rulers of old — the kings and queens and what have you — that first began manipulating money or rather coinage. Reducing the amount of gold or silver in the coins to swindle people out of there goods and possessions. Or tried to end the commons areas.

Ebay being the worst with most horrible junk fetching abominable prices.

When one thinks of all that has been destroyed and trashed for money, one cannot help but think we have become a culture of dragons. Knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing. And how can somebody chide some group for holding on to their money with such a death’s grip when they themselves hold on to theirs just as tightly. That poor people are more generous than the rich and more empathetic.

When all the trees have been cut down, when all the animals have been hunted, when all the waters are polluted, when all the air is unsafe to breathe, only then will you discover you cannot eat money.
