Bird flu has crossed into humans from birds in China, resulting in a death that has health workers concerned for an imminent significant outbreak.

‘It’s worrisome any time a disease jumps the species barrier from animals to humans. That said, the case is under investigation (by Chinese authorities) and there’s no evidence of human-to-human transmission yet,’ O’Leary told The Associated Press by phone.

The potential for bird flu viruses to mutate and spread from person to person is what worries health experts. Such an event would likely cause many people to fall ill. Right now, contact with an infected bird is how humans get the virus.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Azarov announced that his country had been saved from bankruptcy by a $15BN deal with Russia.

Azarov said there was no way Ukraine could have signed an Association Agreement with the European Union as Kiev would have had to have accepted unfeasibly stringent IMF conditions for economic reform.

He also lambasted the terms of the 2009 gas deal between Russia and Ukraine signed by the government of former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko for which she has since been jailed.

‘The president put an end to this story of treason of the national interests of the country by the same forces who are sowing instability today,’ he said.

Ongoing feuding between parties in Turkey have led to the firing of Istanbul’s police chief after he conducted raids claimed to be for fighting corruption.

Some 52 people, including three sons of ministers, were arrested in the dawn raids which prompted the dismissals.

Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan has denounced the inquiry as a ‘dirty operation’ against his government.

Tuesday’s arrests were carried out as part of an inquiry into alleged bribery involving public tenders.
