Any Day We Step Back From War Is a Good Day

Secretary of State John Kerry pulls off a diplomatic coup

Over the weekend a nuclear deal was reached with Iran. I’m not an expert on Iran so I can’t add new insight regarding the outlines of the deal, but in general, any day we are taking a step back from war is a good day.

War is the most horrible and destructive of all human activities. It should be avoided whenever possible. While that would seem self-evident, it sadly needs to be repeated often because we have such a massive military contractor industry in this country that profits off war and there is never a shortage of people cheerleading for destruction.

This deal is not a complete solution but it decreases the chance of war, paves the way for further negotiations, and by modestly reducing sanctions it should ease the suffering of regular Iranians. They are ordinary people who are being punished for the stupidity of their leaders. That should never be forgotten.

While it is still early, it appears President Obama did a very good thing here. He and his team deserve great credit for this move.
