Overwhelmingly Americans Back Raising the Minimum Wage

Three quarters of the country believe the federal minimum wage should be increased. From Gallup:

Trend: Raising the Mimimum Wage

The idea has strong support across the board. It has the support of 91 percent of Democrats, 76 percent of Independents and even 58 percent of Republicans.

The poll also found 69 percent would support raising the minimum wage to $9 an hour and have it automatically increase in the future based on inflation. This idea has slightly less support because indexing the minimum wage is noticeably less popular with Republicans.

In general raising the minimum wage is a popular issue with real political resonance. It is a smart political move that Democrats seem to be making a part of their 2014 efforts.
