Portland, Maine Votes Overwhelmingly for Marijuana Legalization

The people of Portland, Maine overwhelmingly voted in support of legalizing marijuana. With 100 percent of precincts reporting Question 1 was approved 67 percent yes to 33 percent no.*

The ballot measure legalized possession of up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana for adults 21 and over within city limits. The practical impact of the law should probably be modest given that marijuana is still technically illegal but decriminalized in Maine.

It is, though, a powerful political statement. There is already a strong effort underway to push for the whole state to legalize marijuana. Such an overwhelming vote in the state’s largest city is a strong signal that the people are ready to embrace this reform. Legalization in Colorado came a few years after the people of Denver approved a similar pro-pot local ordinance.

There is a good chance a marijuana legalization initiative will be put on the statewide ballot in 2016.
