Majority Think Republican Control of the House is Bad for the Country

The GOP brand continues to take a beating

More signs the government shutdown has done real political damage to Republicans. The new CNN/ORC poll found 54 percent of Americans think it is a bad thing Republicans control the House of Representatives. From CNN:

And the CNN/ORC International survey also indicates that more than six in 10 Americans say that Speaker of the House John Boehner should be replaced. […]

According to the survey, 54% say it’s a bad thing that the GOP controls the House, up 11 points from last December, soon after the 2012 elections when the Republicans kept control of the chamber. Only 38% say it’s a good thing the GOP controls the House, a 13-point dive from the end of last year.

The poll found that since Republicans took over the House a plurality of Americans thought it was a good thing they control this one part of the government — until now. Back in December 51 percent of Americans thought it was good the Republicans held this one point of power.

Americans used to see Republican control of the House as a useful check, but since the shutdown they see a danger that can cause serious problems. This is the kind of change in perception that can have a real impact on elections.

Obviously, a year is a long time in politics but Republicans have a real problem at the moment.
