Roommate of Slain Tsarnaev Acquaintance Deported After Speaking Against FBI

Last week Tatiana Gruzdeva spent her 20th birthday in jail. This roommate of slain Tsarnaev acquaintance Ibragim Todashev was the second person associated with the case to have the experience, after Dzhokhar Tsarnaev himself. (His friends Dias Kadyrbayev and Azamat Tazhayakov, jailed because they acted upon a message from him to the effect of lol, I guess you can have the stuff in my room, will also encounter it before long.) But now that interim status is over, as she was deported to Russia last weekend, and is now home in Moldova.

Apparently this was considered an “emergency” deportation, as that was the only type that was supposed to be allowed during the government shutdown.

To be sure, ICE has so far not commented on the case, its answering machine saying that it cannot answer the phone because of the shutdown. But Gruzdeva herself has said she was told she was being deported because she gave an interview to Boston Magazine. That would be the piece where she described in detail the harassment of Ibragim Todashev by agents of the Boston branch of the FBI in the days before they killed him, as is discussed here.

An immigration lawyer contacted by Boston Magazine said that Gruzdeva was most likely granted a stay of her expired visa in the summer under an “order of supervision,” where ICE is within its legal rights to deport her for speaking to the media.

Could be, but that does not make it reasonable.
