GOP’s Favorability Hits Record Low

Another day and another poll showing this government shutdown is doing significant damage to the Republican brand. According to Gallup, the Republican party’s favorable rating is now the lowest it has ever been in the history of their polling. Lower than it was in the midst of the Clinton impeachment. From Gallup:

Republican and Democratic Party Favorables, 1992-2013

The poll found that the Republican party’s unfavorable rating has also hit a record high. Currently 62 percent of Americans view the party negatively.

The shutdown has technically hurt the Democratic brand but in a two party political system politics is almost always a zero-sum game. It doesn’t matter if the Democratic brand is getting hurt as long as the Republican brand is cratering.

This poll is so bad for Republicans that it has a real chance of spurring them to put an end to this situation.
