At Cheney Roast, Torture And Libby Case Get Laughs
Former Vice President Dick Cheney was honored at the luxurious Plaza Hotel in Manhattan in a roast organized by Commentary magazine. The event was sponsored by Hedge Fund managers with John Podhoretz of Commentary emceeing. The roasters were Donald Rumsfeld, Michael Mukasey, Joe Lieberman, and Scooter Libby.
According to a few attendees the jokes were often offensive.
From former Senator Joesph Lieberman:
Senator Joe Lieberman “said something to the effect that it’s nice that we’re all here at the Plaza instead of in cages after some war crimes trial,” recalled one person who was there.
Torture also got a lot of laughs with Cheney himself telling a story about Jay Leno joking about Cheney waterboarding an animal he was hunting when his gun failed to work. Rumsfeld also joked about Cheney waterboarding a fish.
Scooter Libby told a few jokes regarding his conviction, including a joke about breaking the law and receiving clemency instead of an outright pardon by President Bush:
“Libby said George Bush sent a note: ‘Pardon me, I can’t make it,’” one guest recalled.
And to think only a few years ago these folks were facing prison and public ridicule. Now they eat fancy dinners while mocking the rule of law they escaped. It was a great idea for the Obama Administration to give the Bush cronies a pass on their crimes, they have really learned their lesson.
All is well that ends well.
