Americans Now See Dysfunctional Government as the Nation’s Top Problem

America has a lot of problems. We still have a broken health care system, persistent high unemployment, and rapidly growing economic inequality. Yet in the last few weeks Congress has managed to grab the top spot on the list of public concerns. Since the government shutdown began, a plurality of Americans now think the number one problem our nation faces is a dysfunctional federal government. From Gallup:

This is what the start of a true constitutional crisis looks like. There is a reason so few functioning democracies use a system like our own. When a political disagreement is able to cause such serious economic problems and there is no way to call a new election to have voters effectively settle the issue, things can go very bad very quickly.
