We Should Care More About that Other International Norm Obama is Willing to Violate

If the Syria chemical weapon disarmament plan doesn’t work President Obama still basically wants to violated one international norm to try to enforce another international norm against chemical weapons. He is still talking about waging a war of aggression against foreign country that has not attacked America or our allies without UN approval.

Of these two international norms I consider upholding the former to be very more significant and important to defend our national security.

While chemical weapons are horrible since WWII the number of countries that have used them and the number of people killed by them remains extremely small. Chemical weapons have not even been a major source of casualties in the few conflicts they were used.

By comparison in that same time period wars of aggression not approved by the UN have killed millions. Just a short list includes Vietnam, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait and the recent US invasion of Iraq. Unjustifiable and unapproved wars of aggression have cause many of greatest humanitarian crisis in recent times.

It clearly seems promoting the international norm that it is unacceptable to attack other countries expect in self-defense would do far more to improving the world and “saving the lives of children.”
