Now That The Marriage Equality Ship Has Sailed, NOM’s Donors Are M.I.A.

NOM’s “Million Dollar Match For Marriage” is bombing.

To donate to National Organization For Marriage is to waste your money.  That, it seems, is the prevailing sentiment of NOM’s supporters.

On August 28, NOM announced a million dollar matching fundraising campaign with a flourish:

An incredibly generous donor, who is confident in the marriage battle and our collective ability to prevail, has committed to a $1,000,000 matching gift! That’s right, between now and the end of the year, every dollar you donate will be DOUBLED up to $1 million.

And NOM has advertised the matching grant heavily to its supporters in the two weeks since (here, here, here and here).

But to little avail.

As of this morning, two weeks into the fundraising campaign, NOM has raised only $50,000.  That’s just $3,570 per day.

At this paltry rate, NOM will raise less than 40% of their year-end million dollar goal.

NOM’s inability to raise significant funds serves as yet another reminder of how little grassroots support NOM has.

Is it any wonder?

In the past year alone NOM has failed to stop marriage equality legislation or ballot measures in Washington, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Delaware, Rhode Island, France and the United Kingdom, and they lost the precedence-setting DOMA and Proposition 8 cases in the Supreme Court.

The marriage ship has sailed, and NOM’s supporters know it.
