Mubarak To Be Released As Killings Of Protesters Continue In Egypt

As the death toll from the crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt climbs past 800 people, new allegations have emerged that prisoners are being killed in custody by the military government. A charge the government has had difficulty disputing:

The Egyptian government acknowledged that its security forces had killed 36 Islamists in its custody Sunday, as the military leaders and the country’s Islamists vowed to keep up their fight over Egypt’s future..

While confirming the killings of the detainees on Sunday, the Ministry of the Interior said the deaths were the consequence of an escape attempt by Islamist prisoners. But officials of the main Islamist movement, the Muslim Brotherhood, described the deaths as “assassinations,” and claimed that the victims, which it said numbered 52, had been shot and tear-gassed through the windows of a locked prison van.

But one prominent prisoner is not only in no danger of being killed in custody, but might even be released. That prisoner’s name is Hosni Mubarak, the former president whose corrupt rule started the Egyptian revolution, and despite historic corruption and overseeing the killing of hundreds of protesters, he is reportedly set to be released.

Hosni Mubarak, the former Egyptian president overthrown in an uprising in 2011, will be released from jail soon after a prosecutor cleared him in a corruption case, his lawyer and a judicial source said on Monday…

Mubarak, along with his interior minister, was convicted and sentenced to life in prison last year for failing to stop the killing of protesters in the revolt that swept him from power.

So Mubarak will be free as protesters are being massacred in the streets and killed in custody – some revolution Egypt has had. Despite all the political theater it seems the country is back where it started.
