Rubio Drops Significantly in New Hampshire During Immigration Push
This is not the only poll to show Rubio’s standing with the Republican base has weakened. National polling also found a noticeable decrease for Rubio.
Polling so far out from the 2016 primary has little relevancy on that race, but it can have a real impact on current policy debates. Rubio saw a big drop in support among Republican primary voters while he was the most prominent Republican co-sponsor of immigration reform.
While pushing for immigration reform may not have caused this drop, it is likely many politicians will reach that conclusion. That could hurt the chances of anyone advancing immigration reform in the House.
For many House Republican in heavily gerrymandered districts their only real electoral concern is a primary challenge. Seeing Rubio’s support among primary voters drop while championing immigration reform could give them a reason not to publicly push for it. It could make House Republicans reluctant to be a leader on the issue.
