But ask the NSA, as part of a freedom of information request, to do a seemingly simple search of its own employees’ email? The agency says it doesn’t have the technology.
“There’s no central method to search an email at this time with the way our records are set up, unfortunately,” NSA Freedom of Information Act officer Cindy Blacker told me last week.
The system is “a little antiquated and archaic,” she added.
The NSA has access to some of the most powerful supercomputers ever built and perhaps the largest and most sophisticated digital storage operations ever, yet we are to believe their email system has less functionality than the my local hardware store. They apparently can scan half the emails on Earth, just not their own. What a pathetic lie.
But imagine if the NSA is actually telling the truth. That would indicated a reality that may be even more frightening than the NSA being a powerful domestic spying machine.
If the NSA really can’t even search its own emails that would mean we have spent billions on equipping one of the largest agencies in America with absolutely worthless technology. This would mean instead of being a powerful surveillance program, the NSA’s real function is to be the largest corrupt operation in history. A decades long effort by government contractors to effectively steal tens of billions from the taxpayers while providing only worthless junk. Whole massive facilities of useless equipment. The idea that our elected officials would allow such a massive and systematic swindling to take place for so long is almost scarier than the idea of an NSA that engages in massive domestic spying.
So NSA, are you lying or the largest corruption scandal ever? For now I’m going to continue to assume you listening.
