Obama’s Trayvon Martin Speech Cynically Avoids Real Issues and Promotes ICD

I saw President Obama’s carefully staged “impromptu” press conference last Friday, lost my appetite for awhile, then avoided the Internet and all news sources for the entire weekend. I knew this latest Obama speech would be hailed by his supporters as One of the Greatest and Bravest Presidential Speeches Ever, and I was right, as illustrated by this gushingly sycophantic post on Democratic Underground.  Warning: If you don’t have a vomitorium handy, you may want to avoid reading it.

I wondered if anything was wrong with me. I just couldn’t take any more corporatist hypocrisy or even more stories about the relentless fascist assault on our liberties by a regime that even Jimmy Carter admitted was no longer a democracy.  I did what so many other Americans commonly do–I took a vacation from it. I retreated into movies checked out from the local public library, and into the video game Civilization IV.  Then my issue of The Hightower Lowdown showed up, and Jim Hightower told me what was wrong with me.

I was suffering from Informed Citizen Disorder(ICD), defined thusly:

Just keeping up with all the assaults on our people’s democratic idealism can be dizzying, disheartening, and debilitating–sometimes leading to an emotional overload that social commentator and humorist Marty Kaplan has dubbed “Informed Citizen Disorder.” Symptoms include an outbreak of hives when you see Fox News and a nagging compulsion to “Flee to the woods!”–which is exactly what plutocratic powers want all dissidents to do.

Hightower’s solution, of course, is to get involved in truly patriotic agitation, and he offers some suggestions. For the full article, which is well worth the read, go here.

So, once again I dared to venture forth on the Internet, and discovered this remarkable, spot on editorial on the World Socialist Web Site.   Patrick Martin says what I was trying to say in my last post on the subject far better than I did. For once, I agree with the Trotskyites completely, and I just had to share it.

In summary, it says that the whole Martin-Zimmerman tragedy is being exploited by our ruling classes, which include such people as Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, in order to distract us from the real issues of income inequality, corporate rule, imperial wars, our declining standard of living in general, and from the current crisis of capitalism itself.

I know you will anyway, but please feel free to let me know what you think about it. And have a nice day.
