Americans More Closely Align with Democrats on Immigration

A plurality of Americans believe the Democratic position on immigration reform is more inline with their own. According to a new Gallup poll 48 percent say their opinions on the issue are closer to that of the Democratic party while only 36 percent say their position on immigration more closely matches the Republican party. From Gallup:

Party Seen as Closer to Own Views on Immigration, June-July 2013

The divide is driven mostly by minorities. Blacks and Hispanics overwhelmingly see the Democratic party as closer to their position on immigration while non-Hispanic whites are perfectly divided.

This highlights why the Senate immigration bill is having such a tough time in the House. The vast majority of House Republicans represent very white districts. While Republicans running for the Senate in many states or the Presidency can’t afford to ignore minority voters many House Republicans can.
