Hemp Flag to Fly Over the Capitol Building Today

Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO) holding the hemp flag in Congress

On this Fourth of July what is possibly the first United States’ flag to be made of hemp in almost a century will fly over the United State’s Capitol building. The flag was manufactured in Colorado by the Rocky Mountain Hemp Association.

Rep. Jard Polis (D-CO), who has been a strong supporter of changing federal law regarding industrial hemp, requested and was granted the right to have the flag flown briefly over the Capitol building today. The move was part of an effort to end the absurd federal prohibition against growing hemp.

Hemp used to be a major crop in the United States until it was partly replaced by other fibers and then fell victim to our misguided war on marijuana. Hemp and marijuana are technically part of the same species but only in the way a pomeranian and a grey wolf are both Canis lupus. The federal government refused to see a difference even though hemp cannot get you high.

The governments of most other countries like Canada, France, UK, Australia, etc… aren’t nearly as stupid. They all allow farmers to legally grow industrial hemp and have no problem keeping actual marijuana illegal.

Last month in a vote of 225-200 the House decided to add a hemp amendment to the FARM bill, but that FARM bill eventually failed for unrelated reasons. Still, the vote was a clear signal that the House wants to change our current idiotic policy regarding industrial hemp.
