Obama “Welcomes” the Debate His Secrecy Makes Impossible

{!hitembed ID=”hitembed_1″ width=”420″ height=”421″ align=”right” !}
During a press conference today President Obama stressed that he would “welcome a debate” on NSA surveillance and said that if people know the full details they would think “we struck the right balance.” Of course it is impossible to have a debate on these secret programs because they are “secret.”

We can’t know if the government struck the right balance because Obama continues to keep those details secret. I would love to see the details so every American could make their own judgement. “Just trust us” is not a real defense, nor is it part of a healthy debate.

Apparently Obama’s idea of a “debate” is something where one side doesn’t even know the scope of the issue being addressed, while the other side with all the information kept secret gets to make claims they don’t need to verify.

The only reason we are having a debate now is that the information was leaked. Clearly Obama doesn’t “welcome this debate,” because he kept the issue secret up until now, in part to prevent such a debate.
