Late Night: Bachmann’s Off-Key Swan Song

In a move vaguely reminiscent of Bob Irsay, Michele Bachmann, in an apparent effort to soften the effect this blow will have with her fan base, announced via video posted at 3AM that she won’t be running for re-election next year.

Let’s put it this way: If she really wasn’t in electoral trouble against Jim Graves – who almost beat her last year in a CD that had been made even more Republican than before by the removal of Stillwater, and in a contest that the national Democrats ignored after the 2010 debacle – why did she start running ads two weeks ago, nearly eighteen months before the next election?

My guess is that the NRCC told her that if she ran again it was going to be on her own dime. Their internal polling probably shows her losing big next year, but an unnamed Republican having a good chance of keeping the seat.

Also, the bloom is off the Bachmanm rose in her district. Scuttlebutt is that a number of Republican business folk sat out last year or just did pro forma work on her behalf because they were sick of her grandstanding. The presidential bid was apparently the last straw for them but the national party didn’t dare move openly against her for fear of pissing off her rabid fan base/ATM.

There are other issues as well, such as legal issues that were likely to flare up right in the middle of campaign season (look up ‘vennes bachmann’ and ‘petters bachmann’ for more on this).
