Honour’s Dishonor: Electoral Hit Man Journeys from SC to MN to Work for Gubernatorial Candidate
Friday night was when I described the predicament of Roger Stone, longtime Republican electoral hit man called in to do the nasty to certain non-Republicans, when he seemed to walk back statements concerning Bob Menendez once the FBI came a-calling.
Today, the focus is on another GOP electoral hit man, Push Digital CEO Wesley Donehue of South Carolina. Like Stone, Donehue is known for his scorched-earth style. Unlike Stone, his chief targets are other Republicans.
Donehue’s currently working for Scott Honour, a man who wants to be Minnesota’s next governor. It’s rather interesting that Pat Don’t-Ask-Me-About-Enron Shortridge, Honour’s de facto campaign manager and one of the Minnesota consiglieres of what used to be Dick Armey’s FreedomWorks group, would risk his and Honour’s reputations by cuddling up to Donehue.
So what does Donehue do? First off, he sets loose paid trolls to clog up the internet:
GOP-friendly MinnPost columnist Cyndy Brucato reported in Scott Honour, GOP candidate for governor, names campaign team:
Digital-communication duties will be handled by Push Digital.
Will Push Digital supply these services for Brand Management and Social Media? From the Push Digital website:
In many cases, people are already talking about you. Some comments are positive, while others are negative. Using new search tools, we monitor websites and social networks for activity about you. We leave blog comments, tweets and Facebook messages to respond. If the messages are positive, we begin a dialogue with the user in an attempt to recruit him/her as an activist. If the messages are negative, we push back with the truth.
In short, paid trolls.
But running a troll boiler room isn’t Donehue’s only claim to infamy. Oh no. He’s also known for his dirty tricks, such as messing with Nikki Haley’s website and pushing various sex and adultery smears about her. (Frankly, I don’t think Nikki Haley’s sex life is anywhere near as scandalous as her cuddling up to white supremacists. But apparently that’s not considered a bad thing in the South Carolina GOP.)
If you’re wondering about adulterous male Republican politicians in the Palmetto State, Donehue has been involved with at least one of those, too:
Last September (a mere five months ago) Donehue offered a graphic description of Sanford at college GOP forum.
“Mark Sanford is a piece of human shit,” the strategist told roughly a hundred college Republicans on the campus of the University of South Carolina.
We remember because our founding editor Will Folks (a.k.a. Sic Willie) was also on the panel.
Not only that, Donehue is alleged to have provided a national reporter with information on the whereabouts of Sanford’s sport utility vehicle shortly before the governor was busted having an extramarital affair in 2009.
Does Sanford know about that? Guess we’ll find out soon enough.
Oh, yes: Donehue’s one of the chief suspects in the crafting of the smear alleging that Newt Gingrich’s second wife had a secret abortion.
This is the guy Scott Honour and the Tea Party wing of the Republican Party of Minnesota have taken to their collective bosoms. I’m sad to report that he’ll probably fit right in.
