The Good News Chart of the Day: Marriage Equality

The news is often depressing so it is worth occasionally highlighting when there are truly positive developments. The latest chart from Gallup on marriage equality is good example.

Trend: Do you think marriages between same-sex couples should or should not be recognized by the law as valid, with the same rights as traditional marriages?

That is a great trend line. Support for same-sex marriage continues its steady growth. As marriage equality has rapidly spread to several more states there clearly there has not been a backlash. Instead as more people are exposed to the reality of same-sex marriage more people come to the conclusion that it was misguided to ever oppose it.

There are few other issues where the news has been constantly so good for progressives and the victories have been racked up so quickly. Minnesota is just about to become the 12th state to approve same-sex marriage.*

*Updated to indicate the law will not technically be signed for a few more hours.
