Schumer Draws Line in the Sand Over Pathway to Citizenship
Members of the Gang of Eight have drawn a clear line in the sand over a pathway to citizenship. Any bill that provides for legal status without an eventual pathway to citizenship will doom reform. From USA Today:
McCain said proposals to grant a temporary legal status to the nation’s unauthorized immigrants, but not allow them to seek permanent residency or U.S. citizenship, “offends our fundamental principles of fairness.”
“Any attempt to say in the House that it will not have a path to citizenship will be a non-starter,” Schumer said. “I say that unequivocally, it will not pass the Senate. I don’t think it’ll get a Democratic vote.”
There has been an effort by some House Republicans to split the baby on the issue of immigration reform by promoting only a legal status without citizenship, even though this position has basically no real support among regular people.
The logic behind it is to appear less hostile to current Hispanic citizens by adopting something called reform, while also trying to protect the Republican Party from having to face potentially millions of new Hispanic voters in the future.
Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) wants to shut down this idea before it picks up any more support. For Democrats on immigration reform it is pathway or nothing.
